1.- Introduction:

Supported by a subvention from the "Grotius" Programme of the European Commision (Task Force of Justice and Home Affairs) and with the technical support of the Law Firm "PADÍN & ASOCIADOS", the Association "EURO-LEX INTERNATIONAL" organises this Practical and Intensive Seminar to study several matters of Community Private International Law.

2.- Addressees:

All legal practitioners: Judges, Barristers, Solicitors, Attorneys, Notaries, Registrars, Legal Advisors and anyone who, in his/her profession deals with or is bound to deal with situations in which an international element arises.

Students of the last year of their Degree in Law or of Professional Qualification Courses will also be admitted

3.- Where:

The Seminar will be held in Santiago de Compostela (North West of Spain), at the "Hostal de los Reyes Católicos", Historic Hotel located in the heart of the ancient part of the City. The capital of Galicia, declared as Historic Heritage by the UNESCO, has plenty of cultural life, on the verge of the celebration of the Holy Year in 1999. It has several accesses by plane (international airport), train and road.

Thursday 26th(afternoon), Friday 27th (all day) and Saturday 28th (morning) of November 1998. Check the application dates and rules.

5.- International Contact:

Attendants to the Seminar will enjoy an international atmosphere and will contact legal practitioners from foreign jurisdictions, with a chance to establish potentially advantageous links, especially during two of the planned actions:

- "Precedent and moot case workshop": practical revision of cases with at least one international element. International specialists will chair the workshop and the attendants interventions.

- "Interchange": During the morning of the 27th, foreign participants will visit local colleagues (whether they are judges, lawyers or other), so as to check "in situ" the way they work and interchange experiences.

7.- Objectives:

The seminar will be essentially practical and will encourage participation. It will go deeply into collateral areas not always enough studied which have an enormous importance, such as notifications abroad, international court aid or carrying out of evidence in foreign jurisdictions.

A Certificate will be given to all participants, stating he/she has attended the "European Seminar on Private International Law", under one of the European Commission actions..

9.- Expected Results:

Any participant should be ready to face confidently a case held in his/her jurisdiction, when an international Community element exists or the intervention of a foreign jurisdiction is required, from the relevant professional point of view.

16:00 Opening address from the Chair. Mr. Jesús Palmou Lorenzo, Secretary of Justice and Home Affairs of the Autonomous Government of Galicia.

16:15 "International Commercial Arbitration". D. José-Carlos Fernández Rozas, Professor (Catedrático), Private International Law; University Complutense of Madrid. Followed by questions & discussion.

(Optional) - Morning: foreign participants will visit local colleagues to see how they work and share experiences.
